Charity Fun Walk 2012

See more photos here.

Over 300 people participated in this year’s Carrigaline & District Lions Club charity walk from Carrigaline to Croshaven which was a fun filled family day out. The walk was led off by a celebrity line-up pictured above. Before the start, they took part in a dog handling presentation, which was given by Guide Dog Trainers from the Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind, the main beneficiary of the walk. The event was kindly sponsored by PepsiCo. There was a great asmosphere as groups of friends and families walked the beautiful walkway, some taking their dogs with them for this Sunday afternoon event. A host of free entertainment kept adults and children amused including face painters, clowns and a fire engine and there was a certificate for all participants. The entertainment kicked off at 2pm in People’s Park, Carrigaline with DJ music by PJ Coogan. In the square in Crosshaven, there was a programme of entertainment from 3:30 until after 6pm with a live band. As in previous years, the Owenabue Valley Traditional Group provided entertainment along the walkway at Agamartha. A free bus service operated between Crosshaven and Carrigaline to take participating walkers back to their cars.

An Evening of Songs & Sonnets

On Sunday 13th May, the Carrigaline & District Lions Club together with members of the Carrigaline Singers organised an evening of Songs & Sonnets at the Carrigaline Court hotel.

Joined by special guests, Mary Hegarty (Soprano) and Pat Boran (Poet), the Carrigaline Singers led by Musical Director, Brian McNamara, entertained a packed house of 250 people with a diverse selection of music and poetry. Mary Hegarty sang some wonderful solo numbers including the hauntingly beautiful I Dreamt I Dwelt in Marble Halls from Bohemian Girl. Pat Boran, who hails originally from Portlaoise, read from his extensive collection of poems presenting a unique and often comical insight into many everyday situations. He also recited a very entertaining short story about a litle brown jug from Carrigaline Pottery which he had written specially for the occasion.

The first half ended with a lively rendition of New York, New York sung by the Carrigaline Singers and the show ended on a high note with the anthem You’ll Never Walk Alone sung by Mary Hegarty and the choir with plenty of help from the audience.

The event was kindly sponsored by Janssen Biologics in Ringaskiddy and the proceeds from the event will go to provide a well deserved holiday for local senior citizens at Trabolgan Holiday Centre in East Cork, organised annually by the Lions Clubs of Ireland and to help Cork Penny Dinners who look after homeless people in Cork.

An Evening of Songs & Sonnets

Carrigaline and District Lions Club is delighted to have joined forces with Carrigaline Singers to produce a unique concert of music and poetry which is due to take place on Sunday 13th May in the Carrigaline Court Hotel. The proceeds of the evening will go to help local charities.

This event will incorporate a night of music interwoven with poetry from author and poet Pat Boran who hails from Portlaoise. Since winning the Patrick Kavanagh Award in 1989, Pat has published three collections of poetry as well as a volume of New and Selected Poems. A frequent broadcaster, he presents The Poetry Programme on RTÉ Radio 1 and he is also a regular contributor to the popular RTÉ Radio 1 programme Sunday Miscellany.

As a writer, Pat has a distinct talent for taking familiar things and translating them into humorous portrayals of ordinary life. He has been described as “a writer of great tenderness and lyricism”.

Boran’s poetry is not well known in Cork and the Carrigaline Singers wish to introduce this exceptional individual who has an unmistakable talent for language.

The concert also features renowned soprano Mary Hegarty who was born in Cork and studied at the Cork School of Music and at the National Opera Studio in London. She broadcasts regularly with the BBC and RTE and performs frequently on concert and recital platforms throughout Europe.

This collaboration will undoubtedly be an exceptional night of great entertainment for the benefit of local charities. Tickets will be on sale in local outlets in the coming weeks.
