In the first round of the Lions 5 Nations Youth Football competition, Carrigaline United AFC representing Carrigaline Lions Club scored an impressive victory over Rockmount AFC at Ballea Park on 2nd of January 2012. Rockmount were representing Cork Lions Club. In a close game, Rockmount were first to score but Carrigaline equalised before half-time. Carrigaline scored a second goal early in the second half but Rockmount continued to pile on the pressure and had some great scoring chances. However, victory on the day went to Carrigaline who now go forward to the next round. The Youth Football competition is sponsored by the Lions Clubs of Britain and Ireland and the Competition is sanctioned each year by the English, Scottish, Welsh and Irish Football Associations and by UEFA. Any “Under 14” boys team playing in its local league, and affiliated to its County FA, can represent its local Lions Club in this knock-out competition. Initial games are drawn on a regional basis so as to reduce travelling time and costs, moving farther a field as the rounds progress. The Irish Lions District has its own District Cup with eventually the Multiple District semi-finals and Final being staged at prestigious professional stadiums. In the past, finals have been played at the City Ground, Nottingham Forest, Walsall, Ipswich Town, Port Vale, Telford United, Burton Albion, Rushden & Diamonds & Kettering Town.
