Carrigaline and District Lions Club have launched a new initiative  in Carrigaline called “Message in a Bottle” which could help save lives. This scheme is already being operated successfully in other parts of the country and is fully supported by the emergency services. It involves writing your medical details onto a form which is put into a plastic bottle and placed in your fridge. A label, included in the bottle is then stuck on the door to indicate that the information is available. Fire and ambulance services are aware of the scheme and they will immediately be able to recover the vital medical details from the fridge in the event of an emergency call.

The scheme should be of particular benefit to older people, those living alone or people having life threatening conditions/allergies. Bottles are available free of charge from various locations. Further details can be found here and a sample form for medical details can be downloaded here. We would like to thank Janssen in Ringaskiddy for their kind sponsorship of the scheme.

We hope that the residents of Carrigaline will come out in force to support this unique event and to welcome these talented students together with their teachers and mentors to our town. All proceeds from the concert will go to the Carrigaline & District Lions Club charities and audiences can be promised a variety of music such as popular lilting Irish airs performed by our guests from the “Big Apple” and modern favourites sung by our very own Carrigaline Singers.

Cork’s historic old railway line linking the city with the lower harbour will form the route for a charity run to raise funds for vital local services.

Organised by Carrigaline and District Lions Club, supported by Carrigaline Road Runners AC and sponsored by Phelans Pharmacies, the Great Railway Run will raise monies for the Heart Safe Project which will deliver and maintain a multiplicity of defibrillators in locations in and around the town. The town’s Youth Centre Project will also be a beneficiary.

The first Great Railway Run will take place on Sunday, 11th November 2012 and will follow the scenic old railway line along the shores of Cork Harbour passing through Blackrock, Mahon, Rochestown, Passage, Monkstown, Raffeen and finishing in Carrigaline.

Carrigaline and District Lions Club President Colm O’Rourke, said he was confident that the event would generate support from across the local community and beyond. “The event features 10K, 15K and 25K distances and relay/walk to accommodate a wide range of participants. It’s going to be a well organised, enjoyable day out for everyone taking part, from the serious and not-so-serious runners to those who simply want to walk on a lovely route to support important community projects”.

Pharmacist, Conor Phelan, whose company, Phelans Pharmacies, is the event sponsor, said the event was a very important public health initiative. Supporting an event that keeps people fit and healthy is in line with our policy of not only helping people who are ill but in helping to prevent illness- physical fitness is a most effective way of preventing the onset of many illnesses including diabetes, blood pressure, heart disease and cancers. We also strongly support the beneficiary of the event, Carrigaline Lions club, who will use the funds to help develop a youth centre and to maintain the defribillators in Carrigaline. “Everyone knows how important defibrillators can be in responding to cardiac emergencies including Sudden Adult Death Syndrome . There are six locations in Carragaline, including the GAA club and several hundred people have been trained in their use. Our intention is that no-one in Carrigaline will be more than a few minutes away from this life-saving equipment.”

The run will start at 12:30pm from the Albert Road area of Cork city which was the site of the original railway terminus. For a large part of the run, the route will follow the old railway line that skirts the shores of Cork Harbour. The total distance is 25 km and it can be run by an individual or a relay team of two; one doing 15K and one doing 10K. The relay handover point will be in Monkstown. The race will finish at Carrigaline GAA Club. Water stations will be provided en route at intervals of approximately 5K. Shower facilities and refreshments will be available in the GAA Club after the race.

A 10K run/walk will be held on the same day along the latter part of the same route with a separate start in Monkstown at 1pm and also finishing at Carrigaline GAA Club.

Entries will be limited for safety reasons so make sure to register early. As an extra incentive to register early, the first 500 entrants will receive a technical T-shirt and a medal on completion of the race. The entry fee is €45 for the 25K (individual or relay) and €15 for the 10K. Transport will be provided for runners from Carrigaline to Cork before and after the race. Cycle Classic 21st Anniversary

Photos

The Carrigaline & District Lions Club held their 21st Cycle Classic on the 6th of October 2012. As ever, the event was very well supported and 120 cyclists set off from Carrigaline heading for Kenmare on a beautiful sunny day with little or no wind – a perfect day for cycling. A food stop was provided after Ballyvourney near the County bounds. With any event of this nature, safety is of paramount importance and members of the club turned out in force to ensure the safety of participants. Many of the cyclists chose to stay in Kenmare overnight and were accommodated in the Kenmare Bay hotel where the cycling dinner was held on Saturday evening. All proceeds of this charity event go to local charities including Marymount Hospice. Over the 21 years of this event, over €300,000 has been raised for Marymount Hospice and an additional €300,000 has been distributed to other local charities. Carrigaline Lions Club would like to thank all the cyclists who took part for their generous contributions. A special thanks also to our main sponsor, Victoria Cross Cycles for their generous support and assistance with the event. See Photos of the event here.

Carrigaline & District Lions Club Annual Cycle Classic takes place on Saturday 6th October. The cycle classic is celebrating its 21st year this year and from humble beginnings, it has grown into a huge charity event. In the first year, 1991, 18 cyclists took part and raised €2,500. It has grown steadily year by year and last year 200 cyclists took part and in total over €550,000 has been raised for local charities over the years.

This year’s cycle takes place on Saturday 6th October and is sponsored by Mr. John O’Connor of Victoria Cross Cycles. The route this year will be from Carrigaline to Kenmare and organisers are hoping that it will be bigger and better than ever. All cyclists must raise a target spnsorship of at least €300 and this includes dinner and overnight accomodation in the Kenmare Bay Hotel. The charge for an additional guest is €80. Participants have a choice of cycling the entire 90km route or may also opt to cycle 60km or 30km. Transport will be provided to ferry participants to the appropriate start locations. All cyclists will finish at the Kenmare Bay Hotel in Kenmare where the cycle dinner dance will be held on Saturday night. For details, information and sponsorship cards, please contact Mark Ginn at Mark Ginn & Associates, Station Road, Carrigaline, Tel. 021 4373088. An entry form is available here.

Note: Under 18’s must be  accompanied by an adult.
