2009 Food Appeal

The Annual Lions Club Christmas Food Appeal was held on December 10th, 11th and 12th at Barry Collins SuperValu and Dunnes Stores in Carrigaline. Members of the Carrigaline Lions Club led by organiser, Lion Sean Duggan, took  turns manning the food stands at both stores. The response from the public was excellent and a large amount of  food along with a substantial amount of money was donated. The food will distributed by the Society of the St. Vincent De Paul. Thanks to everyone who donated so generously to our appeal and thanks also to SuperValu and Dunnes for their co-operation.

101_210119 members of the Carrigaline Lions Club visited the Herne-Emschertal Lions Club in Germany last weekend. The two clubs are twinned with each other and this was the fourth visit by Carrigaline members to Herne with the Herne members visiting Carrigaline every alternate year. As usual, the Carrigaline guests received a very warm welcome and experienced tremendous hospitality from their German hosts. The visit included a trip to the neighboring town of Bochum to see the very impressive Christmas market. A large area of the town centre is pedestrianised and filled with all types of stalls selling a wide variety of food, drink, Christmas ornaments and gifts.  On Saturday evening, our friends from Herne-Eickel organised a great party for us – they supplied the food and drink and we supplied the music and craic. On Sunday, members of the Herne club were hard at work from early morning setting up the Advent Market in their local town of Eikel. Now in its ninth year, this market is organised by the Lions club and supported by various local clubs and charities. The little square in the midle of Eikel smelled of Gluhwein and freshly baked Waffles and was packed to capacity by enthusiastic locals. The brass band and the local choir completed the lovely Christmas atmosphere. The Carrigaline Lions donated several sides of Irish smoked salmon, loaves of brown bread and an assortment of Cork cheeses and the whole lot was sold out in no time.

101_2164Also on offer were German favourites like Curry-Wurst (grilled sausage with curry sauce), warm Apfelstrudel and Rosti all washed down by Plum Brandy Punch or Egg Nog. Another novelty for us was baking bread by wrapping dough around a stick and holding it over a log fire.  All the proceeds of this enjoyable social gathering are donated to charity.

2009 Cycle Classic a big success

Photos on our photo gallery:    The start….    On the road….    The party….

175 cyclists took part in this years Cycling Classic which again ran from Carrigaline to Dungargan. Over the past 18 years, this event has raised over €500,000 and this year was the most successful yet raising over €50,000 for the various beneficiaries including Marymount Hospice, ARC Cancer Support and the Hope Foundation.

Following the official start by Minister for Foreign Affairs, Micheál Martin, the cyclists left Carrigaline last Saturday in bright sunshine. The route took them through Raffeen and Monkstown to Glenbrook where they boarded the Cross River ferry to Carrigaloe on the Cobh side. They then made their way across the Belvelly bridge past Fota and on to the main Waterford road at Carrigtwohill. The main bunch of cyclists were acompanied by cycling legend Sean Kelly who provided much needed inspiration for those with flagging legs. A ”soup kitchen” was set up at Youghal bridge where soup, sandwiches and choclate bars were dished out to the cycling masses. After that, it was a series of long hills before the final decent into Dungarvan and Lawlors Hotel for some well earned refreshment. The first cyclists arrived in Dungarvan at 2pm, less than three hours after leaving Carrigaline with the last of the stragglers arriving in about 4:30pm.

A big thanks to all participants and their sponsors whose generous fundraising effort will benefit Marymount Hospice, ARC Cancer Support, Hope Foundation, Senior Citizens and other Lions Club Charities. Thanks also to our main sponsor Kellogs Ireland, road sponsor Ulster Bank and Cross River Ferries for their support.

Massive Turnout for Big Walk

Photos

800 people turned out last Sunday to walk from Carrigaline to Crosshaven for charity. The walk started in the centre of Carrigaline on a fine sunny afternoon and finished in the square in Crosshaven, a total distance of about 8km.

Rockin’ Gerry kept the crowds entertained until the official start of the walk shortly after 3pm. First to leave was Irish Olympic walker, Robbie Heffernan accompanied by a few runners. Then members of Carrigaline Pipe Band led the walkers out of the car park towards the Croshaven road. Refreshments were provided along the way and the Owenabue Valley Traditional Group provided entertainment. The walk finished in the square in Croshaven where the crowds enjoyed the fine weather and live music provided by the Aristocrats. The event has raised over €12,000 so far and the proceeds will go towards the Mercy Hospital Foundation, Croshaven Development and a number of Lion’s Club charities. Some of the money will also be used for the on-going development of the walkway itself. A big thanks to all walkers, sponsors and everyone who helped to make this a very enjoyable and successful event.

Last Wednesday, President of Ireland, Mary McAleese, performed the official opening of Carrig Iseal, a new development of 10 houses for senior citizens in Carrigaline. The event was well attended by invited guests, members of the local community, members of the Carrigaline Senior Citizens Association and members of the Carrigaline & District Lions Club.

CARRIGALINE & DISTRICT LIONS CLUB in conjunction with the local Senior Citizens Association have formed and operated a housing Company for almost 15 years. The aim of the Company is to provide accommodation for older members of the community who are not in a position to provide accommodation for themselves.

The group built 6 houses at Abbeyview, Lower Kilmoney Road, Carrigaline, Co. Cork which were formally opened by the then President, Mary Robinson and now adds 10 houses at Carrig Iseal. Each house is individually occupied and provides comfortable living accommodation within a short distance of Carrigaline village. Support and assistance can be provided for the residents if and when required but generally they live independently. The properties are maintained by the Carrigaline & District Lions Club.

Funding for the new development and ongoing maintenance is provided by fund raising efforts on the part of Carrigaline & District Lions Club and from monies received from the Department of the Environment. To date, the Lions Club has raised in excess of €200,000 towards the project. These monies have been raised through various activities mainly focussed in the Carrigaline area. The support and generosity of members of the local community and beyond is greatly appreciated.

This year, Carrigaline & District Lions Club is sending twelve people from Carrigaline, Crosshaven and Ringaskiddy to Trabolgan Holiday Centre as part of the Lions Clubs of Ireland Annual Senior Citizens Holiday Week.  The group left Carrigaline last Friday afternoon and will spend a week in the East Cork holiday centre.
